Iranian Foreign Ministry demanded the European Union should stop supporting the terrorists who conduct subversive activities against the Islamic Republic. Ramin Mehmanparast, an official spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, stated that the EU must stop giving shelter to terrorist organizations such as Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (or MEK).
The statement from the ministry was made after the Iranian army attacked a camp of Mujaheddins in Iraq on April 8. Up to 34 people were killed in the battle.
Western and Iraqi media outlets represented that as a manifestation of Iran's aggression. Iran reproaches them for supporting the terrorists that had killed over 12,000 people. In the West, they believe that it is Iran that supervises the activities of Shiite terrorist groups such as Hezbollah.
Rajab Safarov, the director of the Center for the Research of Modern Iran, shared his views with Pravda.Ru about the relations between the West and the Islamic Republic.
"Mujahedin-e Khalq Iran (the People's Opposition of Iran) is the most reactionary, active and bellicose groups. The group periodically conducts terrorist acts against the Islamic Republic. As a matter of fact, it is the USA and the EU that use the group for their political purposes to destabilize Iran. The West hopes that the group will become a tool to tame Iran. As for Mujaheddins, they have been cooperating with the West actively for over 20 years already. They used to have their one and only strongman - Saddam Hussein, Iran's sworn enemy. He could use them in his own interests whenever he wanted to.
SharePrint version Font Size Send to friend"However, despite the financial and political support of the West, the group enjoys very insignificant authority among the Iranians themselves. It relies on marginals, criminals, Iranian emigrants and Arab mercenaries. During the eight-year war between Iran and Iraq from 1980 to 1988, the group was openly waging war against its own people. The Iranians will never forget this; most of the people treat the Mujaheddins as traitors.
"After the toppling of Saddam Hussein, they became fully subordinated to the West and puppet Arab regimes. The EU and the USA fund the activities of Mujaheddins, and they are not trying to hide it.
"It's curious that the West continues to accuse Iran of interfering in Iraqi affairs. The West does its best to make Teheran react adequately to the threats from Iraq. The Iranian army is forced to conduct regular raids of the Iraqi territory to destroy those terrorists for the sake of the national security. The West only expresses concerns at this point.
"The sitting Iraqi authorities promise Iran to liquidate the camps of Mujahedin, but they are not doing anything for it. Instead, they claim that there are too many of them in Iraq, that they have families and that they would avenge in case the authorities put pressure on them. That is a lie, of course. Mujaheddins still enjoy the support of the West.
"The EU legalized those terrorists in 2009 as it removed them from the list of terrorist organizations. Still, European leaders claim that Iran supports terrorism. This is a blatant example of double standards. If Teheran is doing something, the West sees that as terrorism. If Mujaheddins are attacking Iran - that is not terrorism. This is a typical example of how Western democracy works," the specialist told Pravda.Ru
As for Mujaheddins, they are not just a group of gunmen. In addition to the National Liberation Army of Iran, there are also political structures responsible for the ties with the West. The political wing of the organization is headquartered in Paris. The shadow parliament is also located in the French capital. The parliament consists of 570 members representing various Iranian parties and factions including members of the Communist Party of Iran, the People's Party (Tudeh), Fedayeen-e-Khalk and Howeyyat. MEK is also represented in the USA, Germany, Italy and Canada.
The leaders of the organization are Massoud and Maryam Rajavi, who live between Washington, Paris and Baghdad. They have over 4,500 gunmen under control, most of them are situated in Iraq.
The organization appeared at the end of the 1960s. It was founded by students - sons and daughters of Iranian vendors who were protesting against the Western influence during the shah's rule.
The ideology of the organization evolved into the anti-Western blend of Marxism and Islamism. The organization became a terrorist group very quickly. The group was struggling against the rule of the shah and his American masters.
During the 1970s, Iranian Mujaheddins killed several American servicemen and civilians that were helping the shah. In 1979, they took part in the attack against the US Embassy in Teheran.
No one denies the existence of pro-Iranian groups such as Hezbollah. As for Iran, the position of this country looks more honest than that of the West. Unlike Western countries, Iran is not trying to conceal anything under the guise of democracy. As for the West, it seems that Western countries have good and bad terrorists.

The description of its logo published by the Organisation remains valid and is used in internal teachings up to this day. No other statement, declaration or other announcement has ever contradicted the attached statement. The logo is being used by the organisation as the official symbol to this day.

And the State Dept. report said year after year that:
"… The MEK advocates the violent overthrow of the Iranian regime and was responsible for the assassination of several U.S. military personnel and civilians in the 1970's. MEK leadership and members across the world maintain the capacity and will to commit terrorist acts in Europe, the Middle East, the United State, Canada, and beyond…"
"… In addition to its terrorist credentials, the MEK has also displayed cult-like characteristics. Upon entry into the group, new members are indoctrinated in MEK ideology and revisionist Iranian history. Members are also required to undertake a vow of "eternal divorce" and participate in weekly "ideological cleansings." Additionally, children are reportedly separated from parents at a young age. MEK leader Maryam Rajavi has established a "cult of personality." She claims to emulate the Prophet Muhammad and is viewed by members as the "Iranian President in exile…"."
"…In 2003, French authorities arrested 160 MEK members at operational bases they believed the MEK was using to coordinate financing and planning for terrorist attacks. Upon the arrest of MEK leader Maryam Rajavi, MEK members took to Paris' streets and engaged in self-immolation. French authorities eventually released Rajavi. Although currently in hiding, Rajavi has made appearances via video-satellite to "motivate" MEK-sponsored conferences across the globe.
According to evidence which became available after the fall of Saddam Hussein, the MEK received millions of dollars in Oil-for-Food program subsidies from Saddam Hussein from 1999 through 2003, which supported planning and executing future terrorist attacks…"
.
In addition, the report of course continues describing "Mojahedin Khalq Organization" by pointing out:
- The assassination of US military and civilian personnel in Iran during 1970s,
- Stressing the ability and the will of MKO members and leadership to conduct terrorist operations across the world,
- Introducing the MKO as one of the most violent political groups, established during 60s,
- Emphasizing the fact that MKO was disliked by Iranians, following the Islamic Revolution,
- Underlining the fact that for more than 3 decades, MKO used its bases in Iraq and Europe to conduct terror attacks against Iran,
- Expansion of financial base, military skills and leaders' activities in Europe.
- Showing cult-like characteristics, in addition to terrorist ones,
- Ideological pressure on members and offering them distorted history of Iran,
- Stressing the existence of compulsory divorces, cleansing sessions and separation of kids from their parents,
- Establishing cult-of-personality around Rajavi.
The report continues talking about the "Activities" of Mojahedin Khalq:
- Confessing that despite US efforts, MKO members and leaders have never been taken to court for their role in illegal activities,
- MKO has been supported by reprehensible regimes, like that of Saddam Hussein.
- Stressing that MKO conducted terrorist operations from its bases in France for 5 years,
- Citing reports that showed Maryam Rajavi encouraged members to "crush Kurds under the tanks",
- That 7 Iranians had been arrested by FBI for transferring 400000 dollars to the MKO for buying weapons,
- Voluntarily surrender to coalition, after the ouster of Saddam, and submitting heavy weaponries,
- Arrest of 160 MKO members, including Maryam Rajavi, in France for using its bases in France for planning and financing terrorist operations,
- Self-immolations by MKO members, following the detention of Maryam Rajavi,
- Maryam Rajavi's going to hiding, and using video-satellite to motivate members,
- Discovering documents that prove MKO received the money of oil-for-food program and used the money for terrorist attacks,
- Citing documents that prove MKO-Saddam ties: lists, a film showing Saddam when he gives a suitcase of money to MKO's known leaders, and a footage of MKO members being trained by Iraqi army.

Former Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-IN) and retired Gen. Anthony Zinni
Former Indiana Congressman Lee Hamilton (D) and former CENTCOM Commander Anthony Zinni told the Inter Press Service that they were paid to appear at recent events supporting the MEK, an Iranian opposition group currently considered a terrorist organization by the State Department.
Hamilton and Zinni are among the many big time former government officials and military leaders who have appeared at recent pro-MEK events sponsored by a group called Executive Action, LLC. (The events true organizers remain unclear, Executive Action's CEO Neil Livingstone would only tell TPM they included Iranian American groups.) Speakers at the events have portrayed the MEK as critical to any chance of regime change in Iran.
Hamilton, who once chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee and was a co-chair of the 9/11 Commission, told reporter Barbara Slavin he was paid "a substantial amount" to appear at a panel in Washington D.C. in February. Zinni, who spoke at a similar event in January, said he had been paid his "standard fee," without detailing what that is.
According to Slavin, both men said they were unaware of the cultish elements attributed to the MEK. The State Department's 2008 Country Reports on Terrorism, for example, reported the following:
In addition to its terrorist credentials, the MEK has also displayed cult-like characteristics.
Upon entry into the group, new members are indoctrinated in MEK ideology and revisionist Iranian history. Members are also required to undertake a vow of "eternal divorce" and participate in weekly "ideological cleansings." Additionally, children are reportedly separated from parents at a young age. MEK leader Maryam Rajavi has established a "cult of personality." She claims to emulate the Prophet Muhammad and is viewed by members as the "Iranian President in exile."
The MEK's cult tendencies have also been noted by The New York Times, The New Yorker and The Council On Foreign Relations.
"They presented me with a platform that was thoroughly democratic," Hamilton told Slavin. "Were they misleading me? You always can be misled."
Zinni was firmer:
"De-listing ought to be done much the way we handled the PLO and the IRA," Zinni said in an interview.
[...]
Zinni, who famously inveighed against the U.S. invasion of Iraq and was a fierce opponent of Iraqi exile Ahmad Chalabi, seemed to have no similar compunctions about Iranian exiles.
"The Iranian community outside Iran has much more influence inside than the Chalabis of the world that we ended up supporting in Iraq," he said.
Over the years, the Iranian government has arrested and executed thousands of MEK members. Still, experts say that the group actually has very little support in Iran, where people remember how it fought for Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war. Iranian studies scholar Ahmad Sadri told TPM in February that U.S. support for the MEK would anger ordinary Iranians.
Although it was put on the U.S. terror list in 1997, the MEK has a history of support in Congress. While it originally blended elements of Islam and Marxism, the group and its supporters say it has renounced violence and now advocates for a secular and democratic Iran. After the fall of Hussein, who armed and funded the group for many years, about 3,400 MEK members were consolidated at Camp Ashraf, north of Baghdad. MEK backers also insist that U.S. forces should be permanently stationed at Ashraf, for protection. (Camp residents have been subject to attacks they blame on the Iraqi and Iranian governments.)
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where several lawmakers urged her to delist the MEK. Clinton said that the State Department is reviewing the MEK's designation in accordance with a Washington D.C. District Court of Appeal's recent ruling, after a suit brought by the MEK.
"You know it's proceeding," Clinton said. "These are very important considerations and reviews and you know as soon as we can we will make such a decision."
TPM reached out to both Zinni and Hamilton for comment.

(Mojahedin Khalq, MKO, MEK, NCRI, Rajavi cult) . ... The group’s hatred of the Islamic Republic led it to ally with Saddam Hussein, and it fought on the Iraqi side of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. Following the Gulf War, “the group reportedly assisted in the Iraqi Republican Guard’s bloody crackdown on Iraqi Shia and Kurds who rose up against Saddam Hussein’s regime; press reports cite MEK leader Maryam Rajavi encouraging MEK members to ‘take the Kurds under your tanks,’” according to the State Department. The group’s alliance with Saddam made it widely despised among the Iranian community at large, as it remains to this day ... Matt Duss, Think Progress, December 24, 2010 The four “demanded that Obama instead take the controversial Mujaheddin-e Khalq (MEK) opposition group off the U.S. list of foreign terrorist organizations and incorporate it into efforts to overturn the mullah-led government in Tehran”: “Appeasement of dictators leads to war, destruction and the loss of human lives,” Giuliani declared. “For your organization to be described as a terrorist organization is just really a disgrace.” The four GOP figures appeared at a rally organized by the French Committee for a Democratic Iran, a pressure group formed to support MEK. It should be obvious that describing Obama’s Iran policy — which includes a new set of both multilateral and unilateral sanctions — as “appeasement” indicates either a misunderstanding of the policy, or a misunderstanding of what constitutes “appeasement.” (Though, to be fair, conservatives tend to use “appeasement” loosely as a general term for “foreign policy I don’t like.”) As for the MEK, after the GOP’s victory in November I predicted that we’d be seeing more efforts by pro-war conservatives to set the group up as an Iranian version of Ahmad Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress. Very much like the INC, the MEK has no genuine base of support in their own country — its real base is found among American neoconservatives. Daniel Luban profiled the MEK last November: Founded as a militant group with an ideology combining aspects of Islam and Marxism, the group is frequently described today as “cult-like,” built around a personality cult centered on leader Maryam Rajavi. [...] The group’s hatred of the Islamic Republic led it to ally with Saddam Hussein, and it fought on the Iraqi side of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. The group’s alliance with Saddam made it widely despised among the Iranian community at large, as it remains to this day Luban notes that the MEK’s “militant anti-Iranian stance has made it a favorite of hawks in Washington”: The MEK’s neoconservative supporters continue to push for it to be taken off the State Department terror list, which it has been on since 1997. One of the many ironies about the MEK is that, for all the groundless allegations that hawks made about Saddam Hussein’s connections to terrorist groups during the runup to the Iraq war, the terrorist group with perhaps the closest links to Saddam was one that the hawks themselves supported. Human Rights Watch also released a report in 2005 detailing the group’s record of subjecting dissident members to torture and solitary confinement. Leaving aside the spectacle of prominent conservatives going abroad to criticize the administration’s foreign policy on behalf of an Iranian exile group largely despised by Iranians, there’s actually a real question here of whether Giuliani, Townsend, Ridge, and Mukasey have violated U.S. law in regard to “material support” for terrorism. In June, the Supreme Court ruled in Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project that “the First Amendment does not protect humanitarian groups or others who advise foreign terrorist organizations, even if the support is aimed at legal activities or peaceful settlement of dispute”: In a case that weighed free speech against national security, the court voted 6 to 3 to uphold a federal law banning “material support” to foreign terrorist organizations. That ban holds, the court said, even when the offerings are not money or weapons but things such as “expert advice or assistance” or “training” intended to instruct in international law or appeals to the United Nations. Over to you, Attorney General Holder.
